In the world of housekeeping, there is a constant balance of two things. You are trying to do the best job you can to ensure proper sanitation but also trying to use your time effectively to get as many jobs done as possible. This is especially true when you are involved in the commercial cleaning industry or you are the owner of a timeshare property or a hotel. While it’s never a good idea to take shortcuts on the job, there are some ways to manage your time more effectively. Here are 4 housekeeping tips to make the job both fast and efficient:

1. Give Cleaning Products Time to Work

In order to save some time and energy scrubbing to remove debris, let the cleaning products do some of the hard work for you. As you are working, use your cleaners to spray down the shower, toilets, and walls. Then, you can clean the mirrors and other parts of the bathroom while giving the products time to work. You’ll find that letting the cleaner soak in for about 10 or 15 minutes makes it much easier to clean without having to apply as much elbow grease. You can also use this technique for kitchen counters.

2. Keep All Your Supplies on the Cart

There is nothing more frustrating than getting on your hands and knees to clean and realizing you are missing something that you need. This can also be a huge waste of time because you have to go back to the supply closet to find whatever it is that you need. To avoid this, it’s a good idea to consistently restock your cleaning supplies on a cart so you know that you have everything you need. You can also make a checklist to check off before starting your day so you can avoid unnecessary time setbacks. 3. Break the Job Down

When you first enter a property, it can be overwhelming thinking about all the things that need to be done. That is why it’s important to break the job down into smaller ideas. You can even do this inside a specific room. Instead of thinking I need to clean the bedroom next, break it down into specific jobs (stripping the beds, taking out the trash, cleaning the mirrors, etc.) You will find that narrowing in on the smaller individual tasks makes it easier to focus on the job at hand and it will actually save you time from the start.

4. Establish a Routine

If you perform housekeeping duties at a hotel or the same rental property often, it’s best to establish a consistent routine because you will find yourself getting the job done quicker and more efficiently each time you go. For hotel employees, this is especially helpful if most of the rooms have a similar layout. Also, it’s important to work from one of the side walls and work your way out the door. If not, you will be taking unnecessary steps to retouch an area that you have already cleaned. When it comes time to clean the floors, always finish with mopping. If not, you will create more dust and debris while wiping things off that will get left behind.
